In 1947, Kalevala Koru celebrated its ten-year anniversary by organizing a jewelry design competition. Until then, the company had made replicas and replicas of ancient jewelry designed by the artist Germund Paaer, but now they also wanted to bring modern Finnish jewelry design to the collection. In the words of Elsa Heporauta: "He who copies the old must also create the new." One of the awarded works in the design competition was the Doll by the young Kirsti Ilvessalo (1920–2019). Ilvessalo had got the idea for the hat-headed human figures of the necklace from the poor. Nukekäädy became a Kalevala jewelry classic, which was produced as necklaces and earrings until the 2010s.
