Horseshoe-shaped buckles were a common type of buckle in late Iron Age Finland. Over the decades, numerous Kalevala jewelry models have been made on the basis of bronze and silver buckles found in different parts of the country. The Ähtäri horse shoe buckle introduced in the collection in the 1960s is one of them.
